Known for Both Warmth and Beautfy Wood Kitchen Countertops are Wonderful

November 26th, 2008 by Bathroom Remodeling Support

Few things are considered as attractive as wood counters.  One thing that you can only get threw wood is the timeless beauty that only comes from actrual wood.  The look is something that you can get almost the same look with some of the other materials but there is just something different about real wood that sets it apart for the look-a-likes.

Maple, oak, and cherry are the most common types of wood are commonly used then other kitchen countertops.  Two other choices if you are looking for something more decorative and functional teak and birch are also available.  All different types of wood expand and contract differently so they all require a different type of seasoning and drying to make sure that you don’t have problems down the road with splitting and cracking.

Different woods have different grain pattern that gives each type its own unique characteristics and looks.  Staining and lacquering are two other things that are different from one type of wood to another.  You can also paint wood counters if you want to get a truly unique look and feel or if you are trying to blend the kitchen in with another room in your home.

To prevent your wood counters from warping and cracking there is more maintenance then other types of  kitchen countertop material.  A single block of wood or many smaller pieces can be used in forming your countertops, the separate blocks of wood allow for a more decorative effect.

Pros:

-Moisture and stain resistant (only when properly sealed however)

-Looks and Beauty

Cons:

-Has to be seasoned and dried to ensure durability

-Cost

-Can burn easily

Starting at about $50 dollars a square foot and going up from there depending on many different factors.  If you are going for a natural look for your new kitchen remodel then wood kitchen counters are a perfect choice for you and your family.

Durable and Economic are two Strong Selling Points of Vinyl Kitchen Flooring

November 25th, 2008 by Bathroom Remodeling Support

As both functional and economic vinyl floors has proven itself over time.  Those two things by themselves can be enough for the scales to tip towards vinyl and are not able to afford more expensive options.  Another big plus is that it is very easy to install for the normal home owner which can have save on cost.

I would stronglyrecommend that you opts for as thick of vinyl as you can afford because it will help enhance the lifespan dramatically.  Also another suggestion would be to get the vinyl that is a solid color threw the entire sheet which will also help to maintain the look over time.  If you go for a product that has some sort of design or pattern on it then you definitely want to spring for the solid color because otherwise when it starts to wear you will probably end up being unhappy with your choice to save a few dollars.

Gone are the days of of vinyl kitchen floors making the room looked small and cramped with smaller sheet sizes.  Today the sheet sizes are 12 inches wide which gives the room and more open and roomy feeling.

Pros:

-Easy on the body (this will also vary depending on what is under the vinyl)

-Sturdy

-Low cost

-Resistant to both heat and water when properly sealed.

Cons:

-Lower grades of vinyl will discolor over time.

-If not properly installed the edges have a tendency to curl.

For an average cost of between $1.50-5.50 vinyl is one of the most inexpensive options out there today.  Combine the low cost and ease of maintenance make vinyl flooring a strong runner for almost any but high-end kitchens.

Travertine Ktchen Flooring is a Magnificent Upgrade to Any Kitcehn Remodel

November 25th, 2008 by Bathroom Remodeling Support

A travertine flooring is one of the newer types of kitchen flooring choices on the market today but it is another type of stone, one in the limestone family, so the material itself has been around for a very long time (used a lot during ancient Roman times).  Travertine is formed from limestone put under high amounts of pressure which is what turns it into travertine, and travertine will turn into marble if put under even higher amounts of pressure so it is in the family with one of the most sought flooring materials under high amounts of pressure so it is in the family with one of the most sought after flooring materials around.

Travertine is available in four different styles of finishes: polished, honed, brushed, and tumbled types.  The polished finish has a high gloss shine while the honed is more of a matte finish and the brushed and tumbled types have a more textured look and feel to them.  Sealing your travertine floors is an extra layer of protection but it is not an absolute like most other flooring materials you commonly use.

Travertine is a relatively simple flooring materialsto install but does require a good experience in do-it-yourself projects.  Better for shipping travertine are the smaller tiles with a higher hardness rating, 4 is ideal, to avoid having your new travertine broken before you even get it.

Pros:

-Ease of installation

-Easy to maintain

-Long lasting and beautiful

-Hygienic-travertine does not absorb smells and gases like other materials

Cons:

-Grease and other spills can be a problem if not sealed correctly

-Polished travertine can be slippery

Travertine flooring costs between $3-25 dollars a square foot if you install yourself.  With the look of stone without all of the cost travertine floors is a wonderful option for your family.

Cabinet Re-Facing, The Pros and Cons

November 25th, 2008 by Bathroom Remodeling Support

Remodeling your kitchen can be very costly and time-consuming. That’s why many people choose cabinet refacing instead of replacing their cabinets.

Kitchen cabinets reflect the heart and soul of the homeowner. The cabinets you have in your kitchen have the greatest impact on a kitchen’s look. They come in many shapes and sizes as well as in a rainbow of colors. Only your imagination and your bank account limit the color and design of your cabinets.

You can give your kitchen a fresh, new look with a makeover for your older kitchen cabinets. If you’re happy with your existing cabinet layout, and the cabinets are still in good condition, then cabinet re-facing is an alternative to replacing them.

Using custom kitchen cabinet refacing services to reface your cabinets and drawers is a simple, hassle-free alternative for updating your kitchen. The result is a bright, affordable custom-looking kitchen completed easier and faster than tearing out your old cabinets - most cabinet refacing work can be done in around 3 days with no mess!

You could alternatively of course consider the fact that kitchen cabinet doors can be sanded and re-painted using any color and texture you choose. Or you can strip the surface using a variety of chemical products available at any home supply store. It is always important to read the label and precautions on any chemical stripper prior to using them. Many of these products can cause serious health problems if the instructions are not followed.

This route will inevetably take much longer and be a lot messier, but it is still an option.

If you want to remodel your kitchen on a budget, kitchen cabinet refacing is still a better option in my opinion because you get a much better, longer-lasting professional finish. At about 1/3 the cost of cabinet replacement, refacing is the affordable makeover for your kitchen.

Don’t forget the look of your kitchen cabinets will also be reflected in the hardware you choose, from the hinges to the handles. There are a large variety of cabinet door styles, hinges, handles, drawers/drawer fronts and exterior finishes to choose from, so you’ll be able to pick your idea of a dream kitchen. Once you finish all the choices and have them in place you will enjoy them for years to come.

Choose The Right Twin Mattress

November 24th, 2008 by Bathroom Remodeling Support

The big number of different mattress sizes, brands of mattress toppers and materials mattress pads are made from can confuse anyone who just started with renovating his bedroom and is out to buy new furniture. There is a wide variety of choices when it comes to box springs and mattresses. When it comes to mattress quality and size, you should examine all your options so you can determine what you get.

Five standard sizes of mattresses exist to choose from. Among these are full, twin, king and queen mattresses. The twin mattress is the smallest of the mattress sizes, but it is well suited for children and spare bedrooms. Let’s discover what makes the twin mattress a good choice for children’s rooms and extra bedrooms.

Specification of a Twin Mattress

The other name for a twin mattress is single bed, and it is made to be used by one person only, not for two individuals to sleep on it in the same time. Our standard twin mattresses are smallest available, since they only have 39 inches in width and 75 in length. There are many chocies available when it comes to style, material and price, which is a great thing since you have a more chance to find the right one for you.

Why Buy a Twin Mattress

Twin mattresses have size as their biggest strength. A twin mattress is small enough to fit in just about any size room without taking over the entire room. We do not have enough room in our spare bedrooms so we can fit the bigger bed there, but a twin bed is a different story.

Since twin mattresses have the perfect size for trundle and bunk beds, they are choice number one for children’s room. If your children share a bedroom, placing two twin beds in the room can make life much easier for the children. You can also add some heated mattress pads to make them warmer. We all know that children need their independence, and by giving them their own bed, we are making a big step towards that.

Down Side of a Twin Mattress

The biggest disadvantage of these mattresses are also their main strength - the size they have. It is hard for an adult to have a comfortable sleep on a twin mattress, since they are too short.

Stainless Steel Kitchen Counters are Great Looking and Wonderful for Hygiene and Functionality

November 23rd, 2008 by Bathroom Remodeling Support

Tops among countertop materials on the market stainless steel kitchen countertops are wonderful for any health concious family.  The biggest reason why stainless steel is perfect for hygiene is because it is non-porous so it does not allow bacteria to get into the surface.  All you need to do to clean stainless steel is wipe it down with a wet rag and it’s as good as new.

Another huge advantage of stainless steel countertops is that they are very versatile and they are able to be used from everything from the sink to the backsplash which allows for a more even transition.  If you are going for a very contemporary look stainless steel is perfect and will blend in well with other decorative effects common to the contemporary style.

There are two different ways to buy stainless steel kitchen countertops which are as sheets and fabricate it or as a prefab alternative.  Going with sheets you have a much wider range of options  with the fabricated option but you will also pay quite a bit more.  Pre-fabricated units are still very user friendly and will mix well with almost any other material that you choose to go on the countertops.

The two main types of finishes associated with stainless steel counters are a brushed finish or random grain finish.  The random grain hides scratches and fingerprints better because it does not have the consistent pattern of the brushed finish which all goes in one direction or another.  Even if you do go for the brushed look maintenance is still relatively simple but it does require more work and a little bit more care to keep it looking beautiful for years to come.

Pros:

-Resilience

-Resistant to heat, stains, moisture

-Ease of maintenance

Cons:

-Can show scratches (again not as big a problem if you go for the random finish)

-Higher cost then some other materials

Stainless steel will range from $75-150 a square foot depending on the gauge of the metal and the design you go with.   If you want a good mix of functionality and wonderful for hygiene stainless steel kitchen countertops are a smart place to start looking.
